Public Policy: Cross Disciplinary Perspectives in Sustainable Development

The objective of the series is to reorient education, training, planning, and governance to bridge the gulf between public policy and hinterland communities by aligning culture with development, cultural diversity with biodiversity, empirical with non-empirical knowledge, academic with social responsibility, scientific objectivity with social concern, and growth with equity in policies and programs. It elaborates strategies for community co-directed programs that anchor the formulation and administration of policies—in welfare, education, and cultural and environmental administration—in community perceptions, needs, and knowledge systems, rather than conceiving and executing them in the abstract. It is expected to provide insights, drawn from the cumulative knowledge and experience of thinkers and practitioners in public affairs, for arresting the engulfing tide of biocultural reductionism, homogenization, species extinction, and climate change that threatens human habitats with destruction.

The series is important in offering an interdisciplinary perspective for designing and orienting public policy to promote the good of target communities and alleviate their discontent and distress. It will provide useful tools for students, scholars, and practitioners of public policy to turn globalization from a challenge into an opportunity by imbuing public policy with an awareness of the need to handle power with responsibility.
