Multiliteracies and Second Language Education
About the Book Series
The Multiliteracies and Second Language Education series publishes innovative scholarship on the role of multiliteracies, multimodality, and design-oriented pedagogies in second, additional, heritage, and world language education. Building on the multiliteracies framework Learning by Design and related approaches, the series examines how language learners and teachers engage with diverse texts, modes, technologies, languages, identities, and communities in contemporary educational contexts. It looks to connect theory, research, and practice while expanding understandings of literacy, communication, and meaning-making in language education.
The series seeks authored books and edited collections that offer theoretically grounded, empirically rich, and pedagogically relevant contributions to the field. Proposals may focus on classroom practice, program design, community engagement, policy, methodology, or broader questions of equity, access, and participation in multilingual and multimodal learning environments
Possible foci include:
- Multiliteracies and assessment in language education: multimodal assessment, classroom-based assessment, portfolio assessment, rubrics, feedback practices, the evaluation of design processes and multimodal products.
- Multiliteracies in world language education: curriculum design, classroom implementation, materials development, and multiliteracies pedagogy in language programs.
- Multiliteracies in adult, migrant, refugee, and community-based language education: settlement, workplace, civic, community, informal language-learning contexts.
- Multiliteracies-grounded content-based and disciplinary language learning: CLIL, immersion, dual-language education, academic literacies, language learning across subject areas.
- Multiliteracies-grounded game-based, immersive, and spatial literacies: digital games, simulations, VR/AR, interactive narratives, embodied learning.
- Language program and curriculum design in multiliteracies-based instruction: program-level implementation, materials development, teacher education, sustainable curriculum reform.
- Research methodologies for multiliteracies in language education: multimodal discourse analysis, design-based research, ethnography, visual methods, classroom inquiry, arts-based or participatory approaches.
- Less commonly taught languages and multiliteracies
